I have decided that the perfect outfit for a vintage-loving but practical gal during the summer is a vintage playsuit. That means a blouse, shorts, and a skirt all meant to be worn together. I knew that I needed to make the shorts high waisted and I didn't want to make a circle skirt for the sake of minimizing fabric usage. I used Gertie's B5895 for the shirt but wanting to give myself the opportunity to wear this shirt with other bottoms, I lengthened it to a more normal length. The blouse was a simple white cotton with light pink buttons and contrast thread. It was WICKED hot and humid when we took these photos(thanks mom!) so I figured my bathing suit top would be a more weather-appropriate top than my blouse. Because of that, I don't have any photos of the blouse! I used this gorgeous floral fabric that has some stiffness to it but is still nice and light and airy for the skirt and shorts. I look forward to making many more shorts and skirt sets as I find this the ultimate utilitarian summer outfit that still looks pretty darn cute! |
The shorts, believe it or not, are a very modified version of the shorts to M6083, a jumpsuit pattern! Since the shorts of the jumpsuit are attached to an elastic waist, I put in dart tucks to make the waist fitted while the legs and hips are more loose. I also added a button fly and put in a normal waistband. It's got huge pockets to carry all my necessities: lipstick, hair clips, my phone, and sunglasses |
The skirt is a self drafted gored skirt with gathers at the top of the back gore and buttons down the front. The buttons run all the way down but I only button the top three or four for ease in removing it and to add a bit more casualness. The button holes are perfectly sized for the buttons so it takes some time and effort to undo them! |
